This hotel sits on the banks of the Mahaweli River in the ancient City of Kandy - the views over the river are quite outstanding.
It will appeal to the international travellers who do not want to turn their backs on the 21st century as there are conference facilities, gymnasiums, shops and 24hour laundry etc etc.
Mahaweli Hotel has a 'majestic' ambience with high ceilings and subtle lighting, although its design and architecture is inspired by Dutch and Portugese heritage. Its romantic river setting and convenience for the City's cultural sights make it ideal for short stays or families requiring a swimming pool to keep children entertained.
The hotel is steeped in ancestral history and as such has a friendly feel. Great care is taken to keep the gardens looking splendid.
The in-house ayurvedic spa is a treat for everyone. Kandy being the training hub for Ayurveda ensures the hotel is well provided with therapists and excellent top to toe treatments.
Gem panning can be seen along the Mahaweli River as miners drift up and down the river on rafts by day.
Each of the 115 airconditioned rooms opens onto the mighty Mahaweli River or lush gardens bounding the free-form swimmming pool and sunbathing decks.
The rooms are very spacious with huge beds and silk cushions. Superbly upholstered furnishings to a classic generic style of many international hotels. Carpeted throughout and furnished with modern upholstered settees, tables and chairs for afternoon tea sessions. Large bay windows lead to the balconies adding plenty of light during day.
Soft muted pinks and greens create a peaceful tone to the room whilst fresh flowers add a scent of Sri Lanka. Everything has been considered, with telphones, TV's, mini bar, room service and piped music at the touch of a button.
The ensuite bathrooms mostly have shower units but some have a bath. Five rooms have a jacuzzi spa bath (available on request).
For those seeking added luxury, space and views, there is the Executive suite and Presidential suite . The Executive Suite provides great views and extra space if you require more beds.
The Presidential suite has the addition of a main living area, a fully fitted kitchen and dining area furnished with an 8 seater dining table. However butler service is not available. Interconnecting suites are available for a large group/ family.
Mahaweli Reach offers a formal dining restaurant overlooking the river or a more casual snack opportunity in the Bar-lounge for a light lunch.
A buffet lunch and dinner of international and Sri Lankan cuisine is avaialble daily which is ideal for toursists on the move and seeking good value.
The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere and the staff are very friendly.
The main bar/lounge lies beside the flood-lit pool and is very relaxing for pre dinner cocktails. A neighbouring billiards room entices late night players.
